on this christmas eve directed at newtown, connecticut, site, of course, of the tragedy at sandy hook. the overwhelming response summed up by one local who said, quote, there were nine minutes of evil and an infinity of goodness after that. here's abc's linsey davis. >> reporter: a town in need of christmas cheer got it from across the country. in sparta, wisconsin, we saw these 26 snow angels, each for the innocent lives lost in newtown, each with a name and an age. from kalamazoo, michigan, 700 bracelets from a local business and from students, headed to newtown. flower seeds inside each of those smiley faces for the community to wear and plant. and for the newtown police department? officers around connecticut banding together, volunteering to work on christmas day so every newtown officer can have the day off with their family. and at their town hall, mountains of donated toys from all corners of the country, even hurricane sandy victims sending comfort and kindness from what little they have left. >> we had so much help, we wanted to pay it forward and try to help somebody else.

of the newtown school shooting. there was a stirring scene last night. the word hope, spelled out with candles, outside the wake of sandy hook elementary principal dawn hochsprung. and there was this. hundreds of firefighters standing at attention at the funeral of 7-year-old daniel barden, who wanted to be one of them when he grew up. today, vice president joe biden will begin meeting with law enforcement officials to discuss how to prevent another tragedy like newtown. we're going to have more on those talks coming up in just a moment. >>> and new concerns about marijuana and prescription drug use among teens this morning. a new survey finds 23% of high school seniors now admit smoking pot in the last month alone. 7% say they smoke it every day. and 1 in 12 teens now admits to using the stimulant adderall, which treats attention deficit disorder. a significant increase from just three years ago. >>> and finally, a $500 million mystery this morning after a whole lot more than a prayer was left at jerusalem's holiest of sites. a visitor at the famed western wall found an envelope, you guys. it

in newtown have a message for people who want to send gifts to the grief-stricken town. please don't. they say gifts, from school supplies to artwork, have arrived in such numbers, they overwhelmed the small community's ability to process them. a fund established after the shooting to support newtown has grown to $3.5 million. >>> meanwhile, hundreds of schoolteachers plan to attend firearms training today in salt lake city. the 200 teachers come from districts across utah. they have volunteered for the concealed weapons training. it's offered every year. organizers say in past years, only a few dozen teachers attended the training. they're expecting an overflow crowd because of this month's tragedy in newtown, connecticut. >>> the two firefighters hurt in that deadly shooting near rochest rochester, new york, are doing better. west webster volunteer firefighters, who had been in guarded condition, are now being upgraded to satisfactory condition. the hospital released a statement on their behalf saying they're, quote, humbled and overwhelmed by the outpouring of well-wishes for us

in newtown, two hours to the north and east of new york city. the images you see here, children being from sandy hook elementary school. the district's largest school. one shooter is dead at sandy hook elementary. the school now cleared of shooters. newtown police say there's at least one other person shot. police telling abc news that they're still treating this as an active shooter situation. state emergency management officials confirming that ambulances and other units are en route and staging near the school. again, these are pictures from the park ing lot of the school. police also believe they may have located the suspect's car, again, as we just are getting information here, and again, it's sandy hook elementary school, about 15 miles from danbury, another major city in connecticut. two hours north and east offing new york city. >> obviously, of incredible concern is the extent of the injuries that may have occurred there at sandy hook elementary school. we do know according to the newtown bee on the scene that there was one child carried from the school by police, seriously wounde
